Friday 23rd June 2023, 2–3:30pm
NSUN has commissioned Sistren Legal Collective to provide a workshop for user-led groups in the NSUN membership to learn more about how to register your group as a legal form, such as a CIC or charity, or change your group’s legal form.
Spaces for this event are limited so please check your availability for the workshop before registering, and email us at info@nsun.org.uk if you can no longer attend.
In the case that the workshop is at full capacity, you can add your name to our waiting list by emailing info@nsun.org.uk, and we will be in touch if any spaces become available. This workshop will not be recorded, but we will aim to organise a similar session if interest is high.
What is Sistren?
Sistren Legal Collective is a project led by a sisterhood of lawyers using our knowledge of the law as a tool to support organisation-building by and for minoritised communities in the UK that are working to develop a more equitable society.
We aim to create a legal ecosystem that facilitates the set-up and development of organisations, collectives and movements led by diverse communities of people that often face disproportionate barriers to accessing legal support to effect social change within their communities. We centre the needs of Black African/Caribbean, Asian, immigrant and refugee communities and aim to provide affordable and accessible legal and strategic support where this is needed.
We aim to play a supportive and enabling role for organisations catalysing social change and to redistribute legal power and knowledge beyond lawyers and law firms and into the hands of communities, change-makers and activists. We are committed to creating, developing and supporting grassroots and early-stage organisations, movements and collectives to succeed.
What to expect from the workshop
- An introduction to various business models
- A focus on not-for-profit models, with an overview of for-profits and social enterprises
- Understanding which legal forms (types of legal entities) are available for non-profit work under English law
- A comparison of different types of legal forms (companies, community interest companies, charitable incorporated organisations), including case study examples
- Why is it important to pick the right legal form to house your work, mission and vision
- A worked example of how to register (1) a community interest company and (2) charity (CIO)
- Changing legal forms (for those who might have already registered a legal entity, but may want to change)
NSUN’s Conduct Agreement
We want virtual NSUN spaces to be safe, welcoming, and inclusive. Harassment, hate speech, and inappropriate behaviour of any kind, verbal or in the chat/Q&A, will not be tolerated.
We reserve the right to immediately remove any attendee we consider to be in breach of this conduct agreement. This includes anyone making racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, ableist, or otherwise discriminatory, offensive, or hateful remarks.
Removed participants will not be able to re-join the session, or, if applicable, join any of the rest of the sessions in a day or series of events. In order to avoid the derailing of sessions we will not enter into conversations around why conduct was deemed inappropriate in the sessions themselves.
