Legendary BME mental health activist, academic and former psychiatrist, Suman Fernando, has launched his most recent book entitled “Institutional Racism in Psychiatry and Clinical Psychology: Race Matters in Mental Health”
The book is designed to act as a conceptual framework to help activists and practitioners analyse institutionalised racism including within psychiatry – a fundamental issue about power relationships and oppression that many choose to skirt around or do not have the conceptual tools to handle.
BME service user, activist and former Approved Social Worker and Lecturer activist Colin King, who spoke at the launch said: “Suman’s work helped me understand my ‘mental disorder’ from the other side. None of the books on my ASW course enabled me to address the issues of institutionalised racism”.
