To mark a hundred years since women got the vote in the UK, Time Out London invited currently influential women to pay tribute to heroines who inspire them. Dr Frances Ryan, Guardian journalist and political commentator who writes about disability, economics and social mobility, nominated Linda Burnip. Dr Ryan says: ‘Linda Burnip, founder of the campaign group Disabled People Against Cuts, was instrumental in initiating an unprecedented UN investigation into the UK government’s “grave and systematic violations of disabled people’s human rights”. Burnip is one of many unsung heroes at the forefront of the fight for disabled people’s equality’. It is indeed thanks to Linda Burnip and DPAC that the United Nations were made aware of the terrible consequences that austerity cuts have on the lives of people who live with disabilities, such as mental ill health. NSUN applauds the nomination and thanks Linda Burnip for her tireless activism. To see all 100 years on nominees, please click here
